AAG President’s keynote address at dementia symposium

Last week, AAG President Dr Claudia Meyer was an invited speaker at a two-day symposium hosted by Dementia Inclusive Ballina Alliance (DIBA).

With the title of 'Future fit our dementia community: Lessons learnt from recent events', the event featured keynote presentations, talks and panel discussions with individuals, caregivers and healthcare professionals.

Claudia's keynote address, titled 'Situating people with dementia and their carers in the research, policy and practice nexus' highlighted the connection and intersection of AAG's work, bringing together researchers, practitioners, policy-makers and service providers for optimal outcomes for people with dementia and their carers. Claudia also shared a project from her work at Bolton Clarke, which is addressing co-design principles as a way of working, and shared decision-making as a critical human right for people with dementia. Bolton Clarke is one of AAG's collaborating research centres.

Other topics at the symposium included younger onset dementia, local heroes and support services, a celebration of diversity and adaptability, and climate change.

AAG 500 blog: Homicide among older Victorians

The October AAG 500 blog comes from AAG member Briohny Kennedy. As a PhD candidate at the Department of Forensic Medicine at Monash University, Briohny shares findings from her research on homicide against older adults (aged 65 years and older) living in the Australian community. This is a fascinating snapshot of a topic that warrants more attention.

Looking back at previous AAG 500 blogs, you'll see the broad range of topics covered by AAG members and National Office staff, from climate and health, to predatory publishing, the importance of creativity, the hallmarks of ageing, how radio can support wellbeing, and a statement on The Voice. Drop us a line if you'd like to share your thoughts in this forum.

New community of practice in NSW

We're sharing the announcement of a new Residential Aged Care Outreach Community of Practice, set up by the New South Wales Aged Health Network. The interim chair is Professor Vasi Naganathan, who has long played an active and highly valued role in AAG's national and state-based activities.

The main focus areas of this new community of practice include:

  • Increasing the reach and securing the sustainability of proven models of care for out of hospital care for older people
  • Increasing access to comprehensive geriatric assessment and management for frail older patients in hospital, including peri-operative care
  • Ensuring community supports for older people are well coordinated

The first online meeting will take place at 10-11 am on Wednesday 11 October. Register here.
